S. 37:854 Continuing Education; requirements; enforcement; exemptions; course approval; provider approval; recordkeeping; feesContinuing education providers and courses are approved by the Louisiana Board of Embalmers and Funeral Directors for the sole purpose of offering continuing education hours to funeral directors, embalmers, and/or crematory retort operators licensed in Louisiana. Participation in an approved continuing education course does not qualify any person who does not hold a license pursuant to the requirements of L. A. R. S. 37:854. of the law of Louisiana to engage in any business, profession, or practice regulated and defined in L. A. R. S. 37:854. All providers and courses must be Board approved. Funeral Directors, Embalmers, and Crematory Retort Operators are required to complete 4-hours of continuing education per person yearly. Louisiana requires a certification of completion be awarded upon the successful completion of all approved course. The Board requires licensees to complete Continuing Education prior to their license being renewed. Licensees who are 65 years of age or older and have held a license for 10 years prior to the end of the reporting period are exempt from CE requirements. A licensee who has more than 4 hours of continuing education in a renewal period, may carry over a maximum of 8 hours to the next renewal period. Courses that are for academic credit by a Mortuary Science College approved by the American Board of Funeral Service Education shall be approved unless the course is taken to obtain licensure as a Funeral Director, Embalmer or Crematory Retort Operator.
